Al Jazeera is a state-owned Arabic news television network based in Doha and managed by Al Jazeera Media Network, which also manages Al Jazeera English. Established by then Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani in 1996, it has grown into one of the region's premier news networks since that date.

Al Jazeera Arabic stands out among Arab news organizations for its professional journalistic standards, particularly when compared with those offered by other news organizations in the region. Al Jazeera gained tremendous traction as an alternative to state-owned broadcasters; early coverage openly criticised autocratic leaders in the region while providing wide ranging viewpoints, earning credibility through extensive frontline coverage of both Second Intifada and Iraq War coverage. Al Jazeera English remains editorially independent from Al Jazeera Arabic.
