Arte is a European public service channel dedicated to culture. The channel comprises three separate companies, with its central body located in Strasbourg: European Economic Interest Grouping ARTE; two member companies acting as editorial and program production centres: ARTE France in Paris (formerly La Sept) and ARTE Deutschland in Baden-Baden (a subsidiary of two main public German TV networks ARD and ZDF).
As an international joint venture (an EEIG), its programming primarily targets audiences from both countries; consequently, this channel features two audio tracks and two subtitle tracks; each in French and German respectively.
Arte's programming is provided by its French and German subsidiaries, each producing half the programs; with the remainder coming from Arte Europe's subsidiary and European partners. Select programs are also available online with English, Spanish, Polish or Italian subtitles for easy viewing.
In January 2021, Bruno Patino, President of ARTE France and Peter Weber, Head of Legal Affairs for ZDF were respectively named President and Vice President. Tom Buhrow took over chairmanship of ARTE EEIG's General Assembly that same year while Nicolas Seydoux of Gaumont became Vice-Chairman.
