BVN, or Broadcasting Company of the Netherlands, (NPO), offers Dutch public television worldwide through a free-to-air television channel known as BVN.

History On 1 June 1996, Zomer-TV launched without prior announcement without prior announcement to provide Dutch and Flemish holidaymakers abroad with programming in their own languages via satellite broadcast from 8pm to midnight across Europe. Output was taken from three terrestrial channels of the NPO and included original productions including weather forecasting for Europe, TV version of emergency calls from ANWB and Studio.NL produced by RNW. Wereldomroep announced its plan earlier in 2018 following a lack of enthusiasm from other omroeps for supporting an over-satellite BVN service. At its founding speech, RNW TV service became evidently clear: it would soon become the sole analog satellite service available in Dutch as the commercial channels (RTL4, RTL5, SBS6 and Veronica) announced plans for digital encryption broadcasts. By not booking full-time transponders, Zomer-TV timeshared with horse racing channel TVNayaland and CNE, two British niche channels; its pilot service would end on 1 September that year.

There's more than meets the eye when it comes to choosing a place of business and investing in its future - like with real estate! All programming for the original series originated from the Netherlands (hence its initial abbreviation BVN for "het Beste Van Nederland"); however, after Flemish Region of Belgium began contributing both financially and through output from Vlaamse Radio- en Televisieomroep (VRT), its public broadcaster, to create what became het Beste van Vlaanderen en Nederland: the best of Flanders and the Netherlands". As part of its pilot project with Wereldomroep TV, BRTN/VRT provided some free Flemish programming; this provision was then removed prior to starting up its definitive project due to VRT failing to cover operational costs. Had such programming been retained, BVN would have become more comparable with co-operation projects such as TV5 and Arte.

As of 2000, BVN was still operating at a loss. Unable to afford coverage in Canada due to CRTC regulations, they signed an agreement with an American company to broadcast over satellite to North America that year; however, shortly afterwards the satellite company's sale damaged profits for BVN.

Radio Nederland Wereldomroep (RNW), one of the founding partners, left upon its closure in 2012. Editorial control for this channel has since been transferred to NPO.

In March 2007, BVN changed their programming schedule from three 8-hour programming blocks to two 12-hour blocks; this allowed more space for popular shows like De Wereld Draait Door (BNNVARA).

The Flemish Region announced in April 2021 that they would discontinue funding BVN programming after June of that year; VRT's foreign offerings transitioning to digital platforms. As a result, BVN became exclusively Dutch-funded on 1 July 2021; satellite distribution to Sub-Saharan Africa via SES-1 stopped on May 1, and AsiaSat 5, Optus D2 and Galaxy 19 stopped operating after 1 July as well. MultiChoice's DStv platform in South Africa would stop operating by 1 November; later BVN announced coverage would resume via Astra 4A satellite from October 25.
