CNBC, owned and operated by NBCUniversal News Group a division of Comcast-NBCUniversal, provides financial news broadcasting. At its core, CNBC broadcasts business news and analysis programming throughout morning, daytime trading day, early evening hours and off-peak periods (such as weekday prime time or weekends). Meanwhile, off-peak hours such as weekend prime time are filled by documentaries about business related subjects as well as occasional presentations by NBC Sports teams.
CNBC operates its financial news website CNBC.com which includes articles, video and podcast content as well as subscription-based services. CNBC maintains headquarters and main studios in Englewood Cliffs New Jersey while it maintains another studio at Nasdaq MarketSite Times Square New York City.
CNBC first debuted as the Consumer News and Business Channel (CNBC), a joint venture of NBC and Cablevision, on April 29, 1989. Following its bankruptcy in 1991, NBC bought up FNN (Competitive Financial News Network), merging it into CNBC while simultaneously purchasing Cablevision's stake and becoming its sole owner of CNBC.
CNBC operates international branches CNBC Europe and CNBC Asia as well as being involved with joint ventures and franchise agreements to manage international affiliates. CNBC outdistanced Fox Business in total day and primetime viewership but fell behind them on trading day viewing figures.
