CNews was first released for free-to-air broadcast on 4 November 1999 by Groupe Canal+ and offers 24-hour national and global news coverage. CNews ranks second most watched news network in France behind BFM TV, LCI and France Info.

On 27 February 2017, i>Tele was renamed CNews and since has taken on a more conservative editorial position, often being compared with American channel Fox News. Unfortunately, French regulators repeatedly warned them for failing to honestly and rigorously report news to their audience; ultimately leading them to issue an EUR200,000 fine from France Audiovisual Regulating Board in 2021 for this infraction.

Vincent Bollore, an media proprietor and business magnate, has been charged with interfering with editorial decisions at CNews.

Viewership
According to an opinion poll conducted by IFOP during the 2022 French presidential election in April 2022, 40% of CNEWS viewers supported Nationalist right-wing candidate Marine Le Pen (26% and Eric Zemmour (14% respectively). 26% supported center candidate Emmanuel Macron while 16% sided with populist leftist candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon (16% each).

Controversy
According to Le Canard Enchaine and Sleeping Giants France, CNews owned by Groupe Bollore and Vincent Bollore appears to support conservative and far-right journalists who promote hate speech; Eric Zemmour in particular was found guilty on 17 September 2020 for inciting racial hatred through their articles.

CNEWS has also come under scrutiny for failing to represent diverse viewpoints, as many of its contributors espouse views associated with right-wing extremism or are affiliated with far-right organisations.

Due to their promotion of ideas associated with France's far right as well as broadcasting fake news and conspiracy theories, this channel has been described as the French version of Fox News.
