Cable News Network (CNN), originally founded as CNN by American media proprietor Ted Turner and Reese Schonfeld in 1980 as a 24-hour cable news channel, and currently owned by Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) from Manhattan-based media conglomerate Warner Bros. Discovery; was the first 24-hour news coverage channel and all-news television channel in America.

According to Nielsen, as of December 2023 CNN had 68,974,000 subscribers in the US - down from 80 million subscribers as reported in March 2021. By June 2021, CNN had fallen from its peak of 80 million in March to an average daily viewership of 580,000, down 49% year over year despite overall viewer decline across all cable news networks; it had previously ranked 14th out of all basic cable networks before surging to 7th (after finishing 2019 as number 14th with Fox News at number 5 and MSNBC at 6), before falling back down to 11 in 2021 before further declining to 21st in 2022.

Since May 2019, CNN programming has been seen by viewers in over 212 countries and territories through CNN International, seen by over 415 million households around the globe. Since May 2019, however, their domestic version in America (CNN (US), sometimes referred to as CNN US) has taken on international news coverage in order to reduce programming costs. CNN (US), also available in Canada and some Caribbean islands is also licensed out to other channels like CNN-News18 in India with simultaneous translation services; similarly Japan began using CNNj in 2003 which broadcasts with simultaneous Japanese-English simultaneous translation in 2003 starting up until present day; Japan viewers could tune-in while watching English news updates simultaneously on both platforms in real-time for maximum viewing pleasure!
