HLN is an American basic cable network owned by CNN Worldwide that primarily broadcasts true crime programming as well as live news updates.
Turner Broadcasting launched CNN Headline News as CNN2 on January 1, 1982; later changing to Headline News (CNN Headline News) due to a similar looping half-hour cycle covering various news topics. In 2005, HLN began shifting away from its traditional format by airing more personality-based shows such as Glenn Beck and Nancy Grace as part of its primetime block. In the mid-2010s, HLN made a strategic shift into being more social media-centric by featuring newsworthy stories popular on social networks and debuting shows that focused on this area. CNN President Jeff Zucker announced in 2016 that the network had begun to move away from political coverage by gradually shifting their daytime programming focus toward crime-related coverage and entertainment stories (rather than its current emphasis on politics), along with true crime programs.
After the 2022 merger between CNN parent WarnerMedia and Discovery Inc. to form Warner Bros. Discovery, HLN became sister channel Investigation Discovery (ID). Chris Licht, then-CNN president, announced in December 2022 that as part of a reorganization HLN would no longer produce original live news programming; ID staff now oversee it instead; for contractual reasons daily news content still airs through simulcast of CNN early morning programming while other programming has predominantly featured true crime shows with occasional marathons featuring crime and legal dramas from Warner Bros. Television library series as before.
As of November 2023, HLN could be found in approximately 68,000,000 pay television households in the US- a decrease from its 2011 peak of 100 Million homes- and since the mid 2000s has also been available internationally on pay television providers in parts of Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, North Africa and Canada.
